Al Shaumari
Nature Reserve
The
Arabian Oryx, a large straight-horned
antelope which had been extinct in
Jordan
since the
1920's and in the
Middle
East
since
1972, was reintroduced to the Al Shaumari
Natural Reserve in 1978.
This
breeding program has been a success and
Jordan
now hosts
170 Arabian Oryx of which more than 130
still live in the reserve.
Al
Shaumari also has a resident bird
population; including ostrich and a large
number of migratory birds rest in the
reserve at different times throughout the
year.
