Krak
Des Chevaliers
Krak Des Chevaliers,
is a Crusader fortress in
Syria
and one of the most important well preserved
Crusader Castles in the world.
The original castle at the location had been
built in 1031 AD for the Islamic leader of
Aleppo.

During
the First Crusade of the Christians in 1099
AD it was captured, but then abandoned when
the Crusaders continued their march towards
Jerusalem.
This was then taken under the Knights
Hospitallers of Malta and England.

They later were recognized as the Knights
Templars in the beginning stages of their
presence in the Middle East they helped aid
traveling religious pilgrims.

This was their first public appearance until
later when their order was being challenged
in Europe.
