Aleppo
( Haleb )
Aleppo was the center of many of the ancient
civilizations in the region. There
unfortunately is so much growth the proper
excavation of the city can not be done
today.
There are many qualities this charming city
has that still attract many people traveling
through Syria.

It is known for its endless maze of shops,
cuisine, mosques, and other important
religious sites to visit. The Old City is
centered around the Citadel Castle that
overlooks the entire city.

This was one of the castles under Saladin
the Islamic ruler during the time of the
Christian Crusades. It is still in ruins in
some areas, but the front hall has amazing
artfully decorated ceiling.

The shrine of Zacharias, the father of John
the Baptist is in the Great Mosque near to
the Citadel also. Aleppo is known for its
maze of souqs.
Some of these merchant shops date back to
1500's or older.
The Dutch, English, and French used to house
consulates and participate in trade in Khan
al Jumruk.
Another great religious site is the Armenian
Cathedral with an intricate carved clock
tower and surrounding architecture.
